reflective blog #5

With the short week, there isnt a whole lot that comes to mind for me to blog about. We only read one chapter during the week and it dealt with ethics of the internet. One thing that stuck out to me in that chapter was how so many parts of the world do not have access to the world wide web. I mean, isnt that why we call it the "world wide web?" Everyone in the world needs to be connected so we can all communicate with one another. I cant even survive one day without accessing the internet, I dont know how some people have never and will never be able to use the web. Imagine if everyone in the world had access to the internet and how great it would be if we could communicate with people from all cultures throughout the world. Wouldnt that be cool? I think it would result in better understanding of one another's cultural beliefs and could lead to less conflict between cultures and countries.

The statistics in the book shocked me too, about so many people who can't access CMC the way we can. It was definitely eye-opening and made me appreciate what we have! Also, you brought up a good point about the internet being used around the world to learn about other cultures and to foster peace and harmony among nations...I didn't even think about that. Maybe if the internet were really a global tool, we wouldn't have as many wars. That's definitely something worth considering.

I agree, that was interesting to learn about. I never thought about what is missing from the internet due to not everyone having access to it. I think it would be even more packed with information and blogs. It would be cool to communicate with more people from other countries, though. Good thinking.

Chris, I also blogged about how I was surprised by the statistics in the book about the un-use of CMC throughout the world. I think you brought up a good point about being able to communicate with different people from different cultures. I was saying in my blog that I feel culturally challenged. I would love to be able to speak with others about their life and culture. I also think that it would help to bring peace about the world. The only thing that comes to my mind is that if more people from around the world had access to CMC, then what would make thier culutre so different from ours. I think that the idea that not all cultures use CMC makes them unique and distinguishes them more from others.

Chris, I definitely agree with you. I do not understand why parts of the world do not have internet access. Also, I have a hard time not being able to access the internet too. It would definitely be a good topic to discuss in class and even to learn more about. =)

I thought that map in the book was interesting as well. We never think twice about jumping online because we have access to it almost everywhere. I never thought about this when I searched online and there was a few foreign sites from places such as the UK and Japan, but it never clicked that this was because most of the other countries of the world do not have the technology available to them the way that we do. I think it would be a lot of fun to be able to communicate with these other less fortunate countries, too.
