reflective blog #6

This past week, we had the pleasure of watching "Myspace the Movie" in com 301 class. This is the first time I had ever seen the homemade flick on youtube. The movie was pretty well produced and made for some good laughs and most importantly, it kind of put everything into perspective. Stopping to think about myspace, facebook, and other social networks, they have become a significant part of our lives even on a daily basis. Since coming to college, I have an obsession with checking my email everyday mainly because it is a vital part of communication with faculty, friends, and family. However, I (along with many others im sure) also seem to obsess over checking my myspace and facebook accounts. I think the main reason deals with what we discussed in a recent reading which is identity. We want to make sure our facebooks and myspaces are up to date and accurate because they represent us in a way. If we are not in touch with these social networks, how can we be in touch with ourselves considering social networks are a part of ourselves?

It really did put many things into perspective...I'm not much of a Myspace guy...but I'm hooked on facebook, and every time I feel that I'm obsessed, I just look around the network they provide for us, and see that some check their accounts 30 times a day!!!

the whole thing really makes me realize how depenedent on technology we really are. not just with the internet, but like we discussed im class the one day, take away our cell phones. how would people react to that? im sure there are some that could do with out it, but i like knowing that if i was in an accident or need to quickly get a hold of someone i just need to pick up my phone and give them a call, it is that easy, and it makes our lives easier.

I never thought of my facebook checking being because it was a representation of me. I thought of it more as liking to look at pictures. You definately have a good point. I also agree that the movie did put things into perspective in a quite humourous way. Now when I'm being a creeper on facebook, at least I can think of my obesssion as updating my identity and I won't think so much of the time I'm wasting! Thanks!
